AEO Tools and Jargon

Written & Published by Michael Brown 21/07/25

If you’ve been following Digital Landscope for the last few months, then you know that AEO is the new way people are getting the answers to all their questions. For the people that are struggling to understand what AEO is, how it can benefit your business or just simply because you’re interested, we’ve made this user guide series for you. In this addition to our user guide series, we’re going to go through the tools we use and all the AEO & ChatGPT jargon.

The AEO Tools

Digital Landscope use tools to find the specific keywords that are right for your business such as Ahrefs or Semrush, but what tools are used for AI Search? The truth is, AEO is brand new, so we need to adapt to it. Google analytics offer ways to measure AI search traffic for leads and conversions by filtering certain AI search engines such as Perplexity.ai, ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews, allowing us to track many types of lead gen traffic.

Ahrefs is primarily used for traditional SEO, a very useful tool to find high ranking keywords for your site or your competitors, this can be very beneficial for AEO as well. Since AI search has changed the game, question based keywords have been appearing more often than they did before, this can be very effective if you’re planning to implement FAQ’s into your site, a great method for gaining appearance in AI search engines.

Schema markup is used widely for AEO, it is a type of structured data written in specific code that you embed in your HTML to help search engines and AI systems understand exactly what your content is about.

If you’re building content to appear not just in traditional search results, but as the answer in generative search, voice assistants or chat engines, schema markup is the key to your city. Boosting visibility in featured snippets, voice responses and AI summaries, while signalling trust and clarity to both humans and machines. Showing that AEO and SEO are ever-evolving with schema as the bridge.

The Jargon

Ever since I started working in Digital Landscope, I always got the same question, “What is SEO & AEO?”. We understand our line of work isn’t the easiest to grasp, which is why I’m going to let you in on all the Jargon.

AEO

AEO is an acronym for Answer Engine Optimisation, allowing people to optimise their platform to appear in AI-driven search results using:

  • Short, structured and direct content
  • Schema Markup
  • FAQ Integration
  • E.E.A.T

This ensures AI will simply understand and cite your content for answers.

AI

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, where machines carry out tasks for the user, whether that may be in-general learning tasks such as:

  • Problem solving
  • Decision making
  • Reasoning

or even in many services and apps across the world like:

  • Digital Marketing – Using targeted ads or customer service chatbots
  • Social Media – Analysing content to improve user experience and personalise content
  • Virtual Assistants – Voice activated assistants are able to understand and can respond to voice commands powered by AI
  • Healthcare – detects signs of illnesses, diagnose diseases and customises treatment plans
  • Policing – Improves public safety, identifies potential offenders and can help target interventions

AI ensures people will be able to live stress free, carrying out mundane tasks so that we don’t have to.

Answer Engines

These are platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Bing AI and Perplexity that retrieve and create answers from the internet rather than listing links, unless using for example ChatGPT’s search feature or Google’s AI Overviews.

Featured Snippets

Featured snippets are at the top of the search engine page, giving you a tad of information before you look through all the links that have appeared from your question.

FAQ's

This acronym stands for Frequently Asked Questions, it is typically the title to a specific page on a website where users most asked questions get answered. Ideal for AEO content.

E.E.A.T

E.E.A.T = Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness

This is Google’s way of judging content quality.

Experience: Have you actually done what you’re writing about?

Expertise: Do you know what you’re talking about?

Authoritativeness: Do others recognise you as a credible source?

Trustworthiness: Can people (and Google) trust your site?

It’s not a direct ranking factor, but it’s key for content quality, especially for health, finance and legal topics

SERP

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page, it is the page that appears after typing any question into a search engine, these contain:

  • Organic Results
  • Featured snippets
  • Paid Ads
  • Videos, images and shopping results

as well as many other sections and information.
